Former MCC pitcher Cliff Lee wins AL Cy Young Award

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

NEW YORK (AP) — Cliff Lee is a runaway winner for the American League Cy Young Award, capping a dominant comeback season that made him the second consecutive Cleveland Indians lefty to earn the honor.

Demoted to the minors last year, Lee went a major league-best 22-3 this season with a 2.54 ERA. He received 24 of 28 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced Thursday.

Toronto ace Roy Halladay finished second with four first-place votes and 71 points.

Lee became the third Indians pitcher to win the award, following Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry in 1972 and CC Sabathia last year.

Lee played for MCC in 1998-99. After his career was over with MCC, Lee played SEC baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Lee was inducted into the MACJC Sports Hall of Fame, along with fellow MCC-ers Lou Hart and Ronald Murray in 2007.

Six MCC baseball players sign early with NCAA programs

Six Meridian Community College baseball players made it official to continue their college baseball careers with university programs as announced by MCC head coach Chris Rose.

Eric Callender, Matt Cox, Garrett Harris, Brent Tanner, Wesley Thigpen, and Tyler Vick, all sophomores for the Eagles, signed national letters of intent Tuesday afternoon in Graham Gymnasium.

Callender, a 6’4”, 195 lbs right-handed throwing pitcher, from Baton Rouge, LA, signed to play for the University of Mississippi. A transfer from Southeastern Louisiana University to MCC, Callender led the team with an ERA of 1.7 this fall and did not allow a run until his third start.

“Eric is a hard throwing right-handed pitcher,” said MCC Coach Chris Rose.

“That and he has a great breaking ball.”

Cox, a 6’2”, 210 lbs right-handed pitcher, from Fulton, MS signed to play for Southeastern Louisiana University. Cox was a starting pitcher all season in 2008 for MCC and had a 3.87 ERA. Cox is a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and a pre season Academic All America candidate.

“Matt will pitch in the upper 80’s with a good breaking ball,” said Rose.

Harris, a 6’0”, 175 lbs right-handed pitcher from Columbus, signed to play for the University of South Alabama. A graduate of New Hope High School, Harris holds almost every pitching record at New Hope. As an Eagle, last year he was in the starting rotation for MCC all season long. Harris is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

“Garrett can throw a fastball in the upper 80’s, topping out at 90,” said Rose.

“He also has a sharp 12/6 curve ball.”

Tanner, a 6’3”, 230 lbs right-handed throwing and left-handed batting position player, from Lucedale, MS, signed to play for the University of South Alabama. A transfer from Mississippi State University to MCC, Tanner was named to the Second Team All MACJC last year for MCC. Tanner hit four homeruns in the 2008 MACJC State Tournament.

“Brent is a left-handed batter with power,” said MCC Coach Chris Rose.

“He batted in the three spot for us every game this fall.”

Thigpen, a 6’0”, 190 lbs right-handed Cather, from Luling, LA, signed to play for Mississippi State University. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Thigpen was named 2008 First Team MACJC All State last year. Thigpen caught 55 games for MCC last year and batted .368. He also threw out 85% of base stealers.

“Wesley is a great player,” said Rose.

“He was our 2008-2009 team captain which speaks volumes for his character.”

Vick, a 6’0”, 210 lbs right-handed infielder, from Meridian, signed to play for the University of South Alabama. A graduate of West Lauderdale High School, Vick was named to the 2008 NJCAA All Region team, after batting .375 and hitting 15 homeruns last year.

“Tyler had to miss some games last year due to a wrist injury,” said Rose.

“Or his numbers would’ve been even more impressive. Still he is a possible draft pick in 2009.”

Nationally-ranked Trinity Valley hits 16 3-pointers to knock off MCC

By Rocky Higginbotham / Sports Editor / Meridian Star

Just when the home crowd at Meridian Community College's Graham Gymnasium started to sniff an upset Tuesday night, DeShawna Blanks of No. 2 ranked Trinity Valley knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers.

Then, she hit another. And another ... and another ... and another ...

"How in the world do you stop a team that hits 13 or 14 3-pointers in a half?" MCC coach Hilary Allen said after the visiting Lady Cardinals did just that — outscoring his Lady Eagles 53-29 in the second half to post a 76-59 victory.

It was the first loss of the new season for the young Lady Eagles, who are now 2-1. Trinity is now 4-0.

It was a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance for the Athens, Texas-based Lady Cardinals, who made the stop in Meridian on their way to a three-day tournament in Marianna, Fla.

In the first half, Trinity Valley led for a grand total of 1 minute, 58 seconds. A scrappy-but-effective MCC team ventured out to leads as big as nine points — and was still up 30-23 at halftime.

But in the second half, Trinity Valley got hot from downtown. Really hot.

The Lady Cardinals knocked down 13-of-21 attempts from 3-point land in the second half — on their way to 16 treys on the night.

The first two came from Blanks, who hit her first five attempts from long range in the second half. The fourth tied the game at 40-all, and her fifth 30 seconds later gave Trinity a 43-40 lead.

There were actually six lead changes and six ties in the contest — the last at 50-all with 10:42 remaining. But the momentum had clearly shifted by that point, and the hot hands of Blanks and Shareese Ulis helped the Lady Cards to a 23-9 scoring advantage the rest of the way.

Allen said his team played as well as it possibly could defensively in the first 20 minutes — and about the same afterward.

"We didn't do much different," Allen said. "They just shot the ball really well.

"They got some better looks in the second half, but they also hit a lot of those 3s in transition and they hit some when we were guarding them, too.

"When you've got a top-2 or top-10 team in the nation ... whatever you want to call them, that's the kind of talent they have and they certainly showed it."

Trinity certainly has a rich history, with five national championships — the last coming in 2004. The Lady Cards have had 16 Kodak All-Americans and four NJCAA National Player of the Year award recipients. Last year, they went 27-6 and made it to the national tournament once again.

MCC, meanwhile, is coming off a 22-5 season but returns just one starter: Former Meridian High School standout Tiara Parker.

The Lady Eagles were also severely undersized Tuesday night, as Trinity sported four players on its roster who stood 6-foot-1 or taller.

"Trinity Valley just had so many options," Allen said. "They're big in the post, their guards are big and can handle the ball and obviously, they can shoot.

"But it's a great learning experience and a great experience for our kids to see that caliber of talent and to go up against a team of that caliber.

"We're young," Allen said. "Tiara Parker is our only returning starter. We've got a lot of freshmen and I saw a lot out of some of those freshmen tonight."

Meridian, behind a pair of 3s from Parker, opened the game with a 9-4 spurt before Trinity called timeout and responded with a 9-1 run to go up 13-10.

A scrambling putback from freshman Brittany Bohannon of Kemper County sparked Meridian again, however — and a basket by Bohannon in transition and another 3 from Parker pushed the Lady Eagles ahead 23-16.

MCC's biggest lead of the first half came at 38-29, and the Lady Eagles were up 30-23 at halftime.

A 3-pointer from freshman Tiara Logan of Philadelphia as the shot-clock buzzer went off pushed MCC back ahead by nine at the 18:48 mark of the second half, but that's when the tables turned.

Blanks hit her six 3s and Ashley Grimes hit another to put Trinity ahead for good; then Ulis got into the act with back-to-back treys. Allen called two timeouts in between, but Trinity had five 3-pointers in a stretch of 5 minutes when they turned a 50-50 game into a 73-56 lead.

Blanks, a 5-foot-8 guard from Los Angeles, was 8-of-12 from downtown in the contest and finished with a game-high 28 points. Ulis, from Toledo, Ohio, hit 5-of-8 long balls and scored 17 points.

Oklahoma State transfer Taylor Booze added 11 points, while 6-foot-2 Jasmine Nelson of New Orleans had 18 rebounds and four blocked shots. Six-foot-1 Tawatha Tucker also grabbed 10 boards for the Lady Cards — whose roster also features 6-foot-4 Chynna Burrell and players from Detroit and New York.

Parker led the Lady Eagles with 19 points and six assists, while the 5-foot-6 Bohannon scrapped her way to 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals. LaQuita Burrough, another freshman, scored 10 points.

Logan got all nine of her points in the second half and also handed out four assists. Ex-Philadelphia High School teammate Natonya McWilliams — a University of West Alabama transfer — grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals while Jerrika Williams also had nine boards.

Trinity held a 54-40 rebounding edge.

MCC continues action against ranked competition Thursday, as the Lady Eagles travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face No. 14 Shelton State.

Lady Eagles face tall task in District

MCC faces undefeated and four-time District champs in Texas

By Sean Covich, MCC Sports Information Director

(MERIDIAN) - The NJCAA District E Women’s Soccer Championship will be decided this weekend with the champions of Region 14 (Eastern Texas) and Region 23 (Louisiana/Mississippi) meeting on Saturday, November 8th on the campus of Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.

The game will be played at noon when the host-Navarro College Lady Bulldogs meet the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles.

Navarro (16-0) is looking to build on their streak of four straight District E titles when they host the surging Lady Eagles (8-2-1).

The Navarro team is an experienced one to say the least having been a NJCAA national championship tournament participant four consecutive seasons. Currently Navarro is one of only two unbeaten and untied teams in NJCAA Division I women’s soccer and they are the No. 2 team in the nation according to the NJCAA poll.

“We’ve got nothing to lose,” said MCC head coach Alex George.

“We’re the only team representing the State of Mississippi left in the national championship race. We’re playing an undefeated team ranked No. 2 in the nation and we’re just excited to go out there and play for 90 minutes and see what happens.”

The Lady Bulldogs have been led this year by forward, Venicia Reid. The freshman from Jamaica has scored 29 goals and ranks as the nation’s top scorer.

Ironically, Reid was on a path to Meridian this past summer as she was being recruited by MCC head coach Alex George.

“Reid is from the same hometown as our own Jamaican player, Christina Murray,” said George.

“I thought we had a package deal to get them both here, but for whatever reason plans fell through and now ironically, we will face her with a championship on the line.”

In 16 games for Navarro, Reid has three hat-trick (three goals) games and a four goal performance which came against fellow Texas school, Lon Morris College.

“We’ve got to find a way to stop her,” said George.

“We’re looking to put our All Region player on her to neutralize her. Holly Head, a sophomore for us, will guard her and try to slow her down.”

MCC will feature their own Jamaican star, Christina Murray. Murray leads the Lady Eagles in scoring with 10 goals in 11 games. She is also tied for most assist on the team with four.

“I can’t say enough about the talent on this team,” said George.

“It’s just been a surplus of good things happening this year for us. We’ve got a new facility with coach’s offices and perhaps the biggest addition was a fulltime assistant coach in Michael Smith.”

Although MCC is considered a big underdog Saturday when they face the task of knocking off the undefeated, No. 2 team in the nation, Coach George sees it as an opportunity, win or lose, to continue to build the program.

“When we started this program in 2002 we only had 12 girls on the team, but that team won 10 games and was .500 and we’ve been above .500 every season since then, so I feel like very year we’ve continued to build the program here at MCC,” said George.

“Being one win away from the national championship tournament is another huge step for us. Last year we won our first divisional title and went on to win our first state championship. Now this year we back that up with a regional championship and a trip to our first ever district championship.”

Winner of the Navarro-Meridian District E title game will advance to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships on November 20-23 in Chandler, Arizona.

“We’re all in,” said George.

“I told the girls we’re all in. We’ve come this far since August 1st and we’ve to leave it all on the field Saturday. If we do that, represent MCC and give it all we’ve got, then I’ll call it a win.”

Win or lose for the Lady Eagles, Saturday will certainly mark yet another big step for women’s soccer at Meridian Community College.

Monday

Women’s soccer preps for District

The Meridian Community College women’s soccer team will spend this week preparing for the NJCAA District E soccer championship in Corsicana, Texas.

The Lady Eagles (8-2-1) will face Navarro (TX) College (16-0).

MCC captured the program’s first ever Region 23 title in October in dramatic fashion by defeating rival Mississippi Gulf Coast in overtime.

Meanwhile, Navarro cruised to their sixth consecutive Region 14 championship and is looking to make their fifth consecutive appearance in the NJCAA National Championship.

The District title match is set for Saturday, November 8 at noon- hosted by Navarro.
