The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College Eagles were looking to add another championship to its already impressive list of accomplishments on Sunday at the First Pitch Classic in Panama City, FL at Bill Frazier Field on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast. MCC lost to TCC on Saturday in the second day of the tournament by a final score of 3-2 and the Eagles came away from the weekend by winning two of its three games.

"It is always great to come away with a pair of wins against solid teams like we saw this weekend," said MCC head coach Chris Curry. MCC got its biggest spark of the night from the bullpen that would come in the form of sophomore Steven Taylor. The former Enterprise standout threw the final four innings of the game in relief and didn't allow a run and secured five strikeouts in securing the save for the Eagles.

"He (Taylor) did a solid job out of the pen for us tonight," added Curry. "I was so proud of him tonight and I think our staff was solid all weekend. There are of course a few things we need to work on, but our pitching was key this weekend."

MCC finished the game with seven hits overall and Tolson led the way with three hits for the Eagles. MCC uses HRs to win opener

MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College Eagles opened the 2011 baseball season Friday morning at the First Pitch Classic in Panama City, Fla., hoping to get the season off on a high note.

The Eagles used four home runs and solid pitching from the bullpen to secure its first victory by a score of 7-3 against Florida Gulf Coast, which is the host school for the tourney.

The Eagles trailed 3-0 after three innings of play, but were able to use a five-run fifth inning to take down the Commodores. The victory for the Eagles was also the first head coaching victory at Meridian Community College for Chris Curry.

"We are just trying to carry on the tradition here at Meridian Community College and our guys put in a lot of hard work to prepare for this weekend," said Curry. "I thought that we were a little tenative at the plate in the early stages of the game, but the things starting to come together for us with some good at bats by some of our veteran guys. I am very proud of our effort and we beat a quality opponent that won their conference last season and it is such a great way to get the season started."

Gulf Coast took a quick lead against Meridian in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff hitter Terrance Gore delivered a solo home run over the left field fence. Gulf Coast extended its lead with a pair of runs in the third inning to take the 3-0 lead. D'Andre Tony drove one of the runs in on a single and another run scored in the frame on a wild pitch by starting MCC pitcher Nolan Thomas.

MCC battled back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Gulf Coast lead to 3-1 thanks to the long ball. Sophmore Kenny Roberts, a former Meridian High star, batted a home run over the fence, before the Eagles took the lead for good in the following inning.

Brain Donohoe led the top of the sixth inning off by reaching on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on an RBI double by former West Lauderdale standout Darren Farmer to make the score 3-2.

Gulf Coast would make a pitching change after the double by Farmer. Reliever Andrew Fonzi was able to collect a strikeout of Johnny Tolson to record the second out of the inning, but the Commodores were once again not able to escape from the long ball. Roberts followed the strikeout of Tolson to draw a walk to put a pair of runners on with two outs. Ben Kingsley strolled to the plate for Meridian and smashed a three-run home run to give MCC the lead for good at 5-3.

The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs later in the game to come away with the first win. Freshman Wade Wass collected his first home run as an Eagle with a solo home run in the sixth inning and Kinglsey had his second home run with a solo shot in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Meeting: Fans turn out for rare opportunity to meet Cy Young winner Cliff Lee

By Brian Livingston / blivingston@themeridianstar.com
The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — As the youngster walked up to the table where Cliff Lee waited, the child's eyes were as big as the two baseballs he was carrying for the major league pitcher to sign.

For many who spent long minutes waiting in line outside the Dulaney Room of Webb Hall on the campus of Meridian Community College Monday, this was a rare opportunity to meet a Cy Young winner in person. The scope of ages represented by the autograph hounds was broad covering the young and the young at heart.

Scotty Taylor and his wife, Jane, of Meridian, were in line close to the front. Scotty Taylor had no problem admitting he was 70 years old but did hesitate when asked about his Major League allegiance.

"I'm really a Yankees fan but I couldn't miss this opportunity to meet Cliff," Taylor said with a somewhat sheepish grin. "I was rooting against Philly but for him when they played in the World Series a few years ago."

Seven-year old Caleb Dyess was all grins and giddy holding two snow white baseballs. He was grinning because his dad, Derrick Dyess, got him out of school in Jackson to come all the way to Meridian.
"I've been collecting cards and I have a Cliff Lee first year card for him to sign," said Derrick Dyess.

Jen Loft has to be voted the wife of the year as she kept tabs on her two-year old son Everett and Avery, four months, as she waited for the signing to begin. Loft was there after volunteering to get an autograph for her husband, Tom, who is a flight instructor at Naval Air Station Meridian.

"We are both from Philly (Pennsylvania) and have been big fans," said Loft. "Plus I'm trying to make some brownie points with Tom."

Lee and former Mississippi State coach Ron Polk headlined the "Meet the Eagles" Banquet, which began at 7 p.m. at Kahlmus Auditorium on the Mississippi State University-Meridian campus.

Lee was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 12th pick of the 8th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball Draft out of Benton High School in his hometown of Benton, Ark., but instead chose to attend Meridian Community College in Mississippi. Later, Lee was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 20th round of the 1998 amateur draft, but did not sign, opting to attend the University of Arkansas.

In the 2000 amateur draft, he was chosen in the 4th round by the Montreal Expos and signed in July of that year. Lee won the American League Cy Young Award in 2008 when he won 22 games with a 2.54 ERA. On Dec. 15, 2010, Lee signed a free-agent contract with Philadelphia for five years and $120 million with a vesting option for a sixth year.

It was hard to figure out which one of the three McElroy children wanted to see Lee the most. There was 12-year old Madison who is a softball star, her two brothers, Will, 9, and Jake, 6, and mom, Susan McElroy.

"I'm the most excited to see him," proclaimed Will McElroy.

"All three of them love to watch baseball with their dad, Todd," said Susan McElroy smiling at her kids. "These balls, once signed, will be put under glass cases and kept."

Pitching In: MLB ace Lee returns to MCC for ‘Meet the Eagles’ banquet, retiring of number

By Jamie Wachter / Sports Editor
The Meridian Star
Fri Jan 21, 2011

(MERIDIAN) - The long wait is over.

Twelve years after completing his Meridian Community College career, Cliff Lee is making the long overdue return to the Queen City on Monday. Lee and former Mississippi State coach Ron Polk headline the "Meet the Eagles" Banquet, which begins at 7 p.m. at Kahlmus Auditorium on the Mississippi State-Meridian campus. Lee will also have an autograph session at Webb Hall from 4-5 p.m.

"It's definitely going to bring back some old memories," Lee said. "To see Chris Curry and some of the former players and coaches, it's going to be fun.

"I'm going to get a chance to see some old friends and the park and the locker room. Like I said, it's going to bring back some memories. That was the most fun I ever had playing and I enjoyed every minute of it."

Curry, a teammate of Lee's with the Eagles, will start his tenure as MCC head coach Jan. 28 against Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla. Before his Eagles get started, though, he first is honoring the MCC tradition. In addition to him coming back, MCC is retiring Lee's number.

And the 6-foot-3 left-hander admitted that fact was a big incentive to make sure he found his way back to Meridian.

"I felt like it was such an honor and a privilege to have your number retired," he said. "Plus, I felt like it was probably time to show my face there again. Past time, actually.

"It's crazy how much time you think you have in an offseason and then when you get into it, it's just so hard to get away."

And Lee is no stranger to crazy offseasons. After being traded to Texas last July, he helped lead the Rangers to the World Series and then was at the middle of a free-agent frenzy between the Rangers, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. Last month he decided to return to the Phillies, a team he helped pitch to the World Series in 2009 after being picked up midseason.

"It really wasn't that much pressure," Lee said. "I could have chosen any one of them and been OK. It was really a win, win, win situation. There wasn't a wrong decision to be made.

"I just sat back and looked where I felt I could win a World Series, multiple World Series titles really, and I felt that the Phillies were that team."

It also helped Lee in making his decision that he did spend the second half of the 2009 season in Philadelphia, and that his family enjoyed their time spent in the City of Brotherly Love. As did the moves the Phillies have made since trading Lee to Seattle last winter.

"My family had input there as well, where they would be happiest," he added. "It was a tough decision with Texas last year and where I know that franchise is going. But the Phillies rotation with Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, myself, Joe Blanton. Those are five of the best pitchers in baseball and while we haven't accomplished anything yet, we could be one the best rotations in history."

Getting to that level started at MCC. Under the tutelage of Scott Berry and Kelly Osburn, Lee credits his time with the Eagles for instilling the traits that have led him to his major league success. In his nine-year career, Lee is 102-61 with a 3.85 ERA. He won the American League Cy Young in 2008 when he won 22 games with a 2.54 ERA.

And he's been even better in the postseason. In his two trips to the playoffs, he's 7-2 with a 2.13 ERA in 10 starts with three complete games.

"They instilled the work ethic that helped me be able to play like I am today," Lee added. "Coach Berry and coach Osburn turned me into the pitcher I am.

"I always have had confidence in myself and I decided at a young age that this is what I wanted to do, and I basically put all the eggs in that one basket. Now, I don't know that I ever expected to reach the level of success that I have achieved, but I did expect to get to the major leagues."

And now he's giving back to the place where it all began. And in the process, helping build on the nest for the future Eagles.

"I'm glad I got to be a part of it," Lee said. "I'm proud to say I played baseball there."

The Right ‘Stuff’: Haynes' late block pushes MCC women past EMCC

By Jamie Wachter / Sports Editor
The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — Norianna Haynes is developing into the type of player Meridian Community College women's coach Hilary Allen likes.

The freshman from Northeast Lauderdale displayed that all-around game that has impressed Allen on Thursday in leading the Eagles to a comeback 62-61 win against East Mississippi Community College at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.

It was no more apparent than in the final 15 seconds of the game when the Lions, trailing 62-61, inbounded the ball to guard Chadisty Hickman, a Kemper County product. Hickman, EMCC's top scorer at 20. 2 points per game, was looking to get that average as she drove the baseline. However, Haynes slid over to help and stuffed Hickman to preserve the win.

“That was by design,” Allen said. “She was the floater. Everybody else was supposed to deny and she was supposed to float to wherever the ball went. She stepped over and blocked the shot and did a great job at that.

“These are the games where Norianna as a freshman, growing into a college player, she makes those kinds of plays in the big atmosphere. She's special and is growing into a player I really like.”

Added EMCC coach Sharon Thompson: “We didn't run the play, didn't come close to running what I drew up in the timeout. We went baseline, and I specifically said not to go there, because nothing's there.”

To get that comeback win, though, the Eagles first had to weather a fierce EMCC (6-6) rally in the final 6:21 of the first half. At that point, the Eagles led 30-23 on a Haynes bucket. From there, though, MCC would get just one more basket – from Deanna Bolton with 4:13 left that momentarily gave MCC (13-4) the lead back at 32-30 – as the Lions closed on a 17-2 run.

The Lions picked right back up where they left off, building the lead to 49-36 with 15:30 left in the game on a Kiara Quinones-Noa basket that prompted Allen to call a timeout.

Frustrated with the lack of success from the Eagles, offensively, Allen preached patience.

In the next three minutes, MCC went on a 12-2 run sparked by bookend baskets from Haynes, who added 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals to her 15 points.

“We had gotten out of our offense, and EMCC played great defense tonight especially those first 30 to 35 minutes in packing that zone in,” Allen said. “I thought by moving the ball, we got better shots. When they built that lead we weren't making shots, and we were settling for quick shots.

“We had to slow down and move the ball and get better shots, and we like to play quickly.”

The Eagles regained the lead with 7:33 left on a Bolton bucket. The two rivals then traded the lead back and forth for the next six minutes with EMCC regaining the lead for the last time when Hickman found Raven Howard with 1:27 remaining. Howard added 12 points for the Lions, who also got 15 from Natalie Tate while playing with just eight players due to an injury to Shanteria Tate.

“I think down the stretch defense is what won the game for us, and not just rebounding but hustle plays, making steals,” Allen said, adding that the Eagles held Hickman to just four points in the second half after allowing 14 to the EMCC star in the opening session.

“And what a phenomenal player (Hickman) is. We had to completely concentrate on her and we went to what we call 'no touch defense.' We didn't want her to touch the ball, and she touched it 25 times, but we really played well on defense.”

MCC, though, answered right back as Bianca Powell hit the last bucket of the game with 1:17 left. The Eagles received 17 points and 12 rebounds from Chasity Kearney and 11 boards from Arnissa Galloway as they outrebounded EMCC 65-48, including 17 offensive rebounds.

“We didn't stick with the gameplan,” Thompson said. “The gameplan was one shot and out. Get a defensive rebound and let's go because we knew they couldn't run with us.

“We didn't stick with the gameplan and let them get offensive rebounds.”

When Lakin Petty drilled a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the first half, he pulled the Eagles within 39-36. However, D.J. Evans had an answer right before the half for No. 22 EMCC, hitting a floater in the lane that put the Lions up 5.

EMCC (11-2) kept that momentum going out of the break, holding MCC (10-6) scoreless for 3:55 and without a bucket until the 15:35 mark when Nick Watkins found the mark. However, by then the Lions had a 53-39 lead.

“Our whole focus point since we've come back after Christmas has been second-half defense,” EMCC coach Mark White said. “The first thing I told my team (Thursday night) was I liked their mentality better now. We held them to 33 after we were up 20 points the last 10 or 12 minutes, and it's easy to let up defensively there.

“We didn't do that and I was real pleased with that.”

Added MCC coach Jeff Walker: “They just out-toughed us. They rebounded better, played better and just out-toughed us.”

The Lions also found their offensive flow in the second half as well, turning a 61-51 lead with 11:07 left into a 79-56 lead just four minutes later as all five Lion starters reached double figures, led by sophomore guard Deonte Alexander's 21. Alexander jump-started the run with back-to-back 3s within 20 seconds. Sophomore forward Jonathan King added his third straight double-double and fifth on the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Millaun Brown finished with 16 points – 14 coming after the break – and Meridian High product Donovan Walker and Evans each scoring 10.

“That's sort of been the way we've been this year,” White said, adding EMCC has five players that average in double figures including Joe McCoy, who is out with a torn ACL. “We've always been real balanced, and that makes us hard to guard.”

Meridian was led by Donald's 12 and Travis Fredimon's 11 as the Eagles dropped their fifth straight game.

“We let them dictate play and we just didn't do what we needed to do tonight,” Walker said.
