MCC Falls To Northwest

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles got hot at the right time heading into its match against Northwest Mississippi Community College Tuesday evening. The Lady Eagles had won four straight matches coming into play Tuesday night at C.D. Smith Field to open the 2014 MACJC State Playoffs and the home team was looking to keep its streak going on its home turf.

MCC saw its season come to a sudden end as Northwest Mississippi would score the eventual game winning goal in the final 15 minutes of play to secure a narrow 2-1 victory.

The Lady Rangers will now advance to the semifinal round of the MACJC playoffs which will be played at Jones County Junior College this weekend.

Northwest Mississippi was able to strike first in the 13th minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead over MCC. Abigail Morales scored the goal for the Lady Rangers and Holly Newman collected the assist on the play. The goal by Morales was her 14th goal of the season for Northwest Mississippi.

MCC answered the goal by the Lady Rangers in the 39th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Former Clarkdale standout Kayla Phillips did the honors for the Lady Eagles with the goal which brought her total to 12 goals for the season. 

Northwest Mississippi put the game away for good in the final 15 minutes to come away with the 2-1 road victory over MCC. Morales scored once again for the Lady Rangers to bring her season total to 15.

Northwest Mississippi improved to 10-4-4 with the victory, while MCC completed the 2014 season with a 9-8-2 overall record.

Freshman Danielle Shows also received the MACJC Offensive Player of the Week award prior Tuesday's game against Northwest. Shows earned the honors by scoring a pair of goals last week in a 4-0 victory over Southwest Mississippi.

MCC Lady Eagles Clinch Home Field; MCC Men Win Finale

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles needed a victory Wednesday night over Southwest Mississippi Community College and a little help in the process to clinch home field next week in the quarterfinal round of the MACJC playoffs.

MCC did get the help it was looking for as Jones County Junior College defeated Pearl River Tuesday night 4-0 to help pave the way for a potential home game in the playoffs for the Lady Eagles. The final portion of the formula became a reality nearly 24 hours later as MCC defeated Southwest 4-0 to help the Lady Eagles lock down the second seed in the MACJC South Division race heading into the postseason next week.

MCC will now host Northwest Mississippi Community College next Tuesday (October 28) in the quarterfinal round of the MACJC State Playoffs with the match set to begin at 6 p.m.

MCC got on the board with just under five minutes remaining in the first half on a goal by Danielle Shows to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Former Clarkdale standout Kayla Phillips also collected the assist on the opening goal for MCC.

The Lady Eagles quickly put the game away for good with a scoring spree in the second half to take the 4-0 victory over Southwest. Shows scored her second goal of the match in the first ten minutes of the second half and Tori Becerra added a goal in the 70th minute to give the Lady Eagles a 3-0 leads. Shows added to her already impressive night by collecting an assist on the goal by Becerra.

Freshman Angela Manley added the final goal of the match by MCC in the 78th minute on assist by Phillips to give the green and white a four-goal victory.

The MCC men were also in action Wednesday night against Southwest and concluded the 2014 season with a little magic from a trio of former West Lauderdale products. MCC fought through a tough match to end the regular season, but came away with a 2-1 victory over the Bears.

The Eagles erased a 1-0 deficit in the 73rd minute as a couple of former West Lauderdale stars combined for the first goal of the match for MCC. Chris Mallette scored an amazing goal to tie the match with a great assist on the play by Lyle Daughtry for the Eagles.

MCC took the lead with just under nine minutes to go in the match on another solid play to make the score 2-1. Daughtry was in the mix again for the Eagles by scoring the goal on an assist by another former West Lauderdale star, Tyler Germany, to give the Eagles a slim lead. 

MCC was able to hold off Southwest in the final minutes to end the season on a high note with a 2-1 victory.

MCC Golf Captures Lou Hart Invitational

The Meridian Community College golf team completed its first championship victory of the fall season by winning the Lou Hart Invitational Tournament by three strokes Tuesday afternoon at Northwood Country Club.

Meridian Community College  golfer Ty Medling won his first individual collegiate medalist and led the Eagles to the tournament victory. The Eagles shot 294 and 292 for the two-day tournament over runner-up Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College by three strokes. Faulkner State Community College came in third followed by East Mississippi Community College, East Central Community College, and the MCC White squad.

Sophomore Ty Medling led the way with a one under 141 (72, 69) to win his first collegiate individual title. Connor Cavin, also a sophomore, made the All-Tournament team by shooting a four over 146 (74, 72). Austin Terrell finished with a 149 (74, 75), Grant Renegar shot 151 (75, 76) and Clayton Gray shot 156 (74, 82) to round out the MCC Green team.

Meridian native Beau McMullen, playing for MCC White, had a hole in one on number 17. Beau shot 78, 81 for the tournament. Other members of the MCC White team were Luther Thompson ( 74, 80), Colby Evans (84, 77), Will Zizmann ( 82, 82) and Aaron Ricks ( 88, 84).

The Eagles return to action at Goosepond Golf Course in Scottsboro, Al  on November 1-2.

Pickering Named MACJC POTW

Meridian Community College goalkeeper Chanler Pickering received a distinguished honor Monday afternoon by being named the MACJC Goalkeeper of the week as voted by the sports information directors inside the conference. 

Pickering will also be eligible for the National Goalkeeper of the week after helping pace the MCC Lady Eagles to a pair of conference victories last week. 

Pickering collected 20 saves total in the two wins and finished with a high of 14 saves in a 2-1 victory over Pearl River Community College at home last Wednesday. 

MCC will conclude the 2014 regular season Wednesday night at 5 p.m. against Southwest Mississippi Community College. The Lady Eagles need a victory combined with a loss by Pearl River to clinch the second seed inside the MACJC South Division standings. The team that finishes with the second seed will host the MACJC Quarterfinal round of the playoffs at home October 28. 

MCC Soccer Clinches Playoff Spot

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles entered its match with Pearl River Community College Wednesday night at C.D. Smith Field knowing it had an opportunity to clinch a spot in the MACJC State Playoffs. The Lady Eagles not only clinched a spot in the postseason, but did it in dramatic fashion.

MCC scored a second half goal and held on despite a furious effort by PRCC to earn a hard fought 2-1 victory.

The win for MCC moved its overall record to 7-7-1 and 5-3 in South Division play. The Lady Eagles still have their sights set on earning home field for the quarterfinals of the MACJC State Playoffs. MCC will need a pair of wins to conclude the season to earn home field for the quarterfinal round of the playoffs which is set for October 28.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast Friday afternoon for a 4:30 match and will finish the 2014 regular season against Southwest Mississippi next Wednesday (October 22) at 5 p.m.

MCC defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast earlier this season 4-0 and also earned a shutout over Southwest by a final of 3-0.

Pearl River took a very early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, but the Lady Eagles would bounce back to tie the game later in the half. Former Clarkdale standout Kayla Phillips would score the goal on a assist by Tori Riebock to tie the game at 1-1.

MCC would the score the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute to secure the 2-1 win. Ashley Watts would do the honors for the Lady Eagles by scoring the eventual game winner on an assist by Danielle Shows.

The MCC men were also action Wednesday night against Pearl River and dropped a tough 4-1 decision at the hands of the Wildcats. The Eagles will also return to action Friday on the road at Mississippi Gulf Coast at 6:30 p.m. and conclude the 2014 regular season next Wednesday (October 22) against Southwest Mississippi at 7 p.m.
