MCC Track and Field Set For Big Stage

From School Reports

On Saturday, the MCC Track and Field Team will return to competition in Birmingham, AL at the Auburn Invitational.

This will be MCC’s second meet of the indoor season, after having competed over in Birmingham in December at the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker.
MCC will face some of the top NCAA teams in the country including: Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and Ole Miss.

“This is a meet where we have the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the country and see what we can do,” said Head Coach, Chip Gayden. “We are looking to go in and execute what we have been working on all fall and through the break and get better against quality competition.”

For MCC, the men will look to continue their strong performances from December.

Freshman, Chris Lewis, who is currently number one in the NJCAA in the 60 meters will have a showdown with some of the best 60 meter sprinters in college including Jaylen Miller from Ole Miss, who currently has the top time in the NCAA and in the world at the 60 meters.

Cravorkian Carson, a freshman from Tylertown, Miss will also compete in the 60 meters and look to improve on his top 8 national ranking in the event.
MCC also looks to have a good showing in the 400m with Eric Durham and Bryson Penton who are both currently ranked number second and eighth respectively in the NJCAA in the event.  Freshman, Devontre Young will also make his debut for MCC in the event.

The meet will also see the debut of freshman jumper Lakendric Tuck in both the long jump and triple jump.
MCC will debut their 4 x 400m relay team on Saturday, in hopes of qualifying for the NJCAA National Championships.

Coach Gayden said the team is excited about the great opportunities the team has to post some great marks Saturday. “When you compete against top talent, it kind of brings out the best in everyone. It definitely keeps everyone focused on the task at hand and executing what they need to do to be successful.  I have seen the mentality and focus of the team change since they got back from the break.”

The meet at the Birmingham Crossplex starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the men’s long jump and runs through 6:50 p.m. with the men’s 4 x 400m relay.  You can follow the meet with live results at http://deltatiming.com/results.aspx
