MCC Golf Captures Second Straight Tournament Title

The Meridian Community College golf team continued its hot streak on Tuesday by capturing the 2015 Pinnacle Trust Invitational Championship hosted by Belhaven University.

The Eagles finished the two-day event with a total team score of 867 (3-over par) which was 12 strokes ahead of Faulkner. Former Lamar School star Lance Strickland also collected first place honors with a total three-round score of 207 (9-under par) to lead the Eagles. The tournament victory for Strickland also marked his second straight first place finish after winning the MACJC Event #2 last weekend.

Grant Renegar earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for MCC by placing tied for third with a two-day total of 218 (2-over par), while Camden Backel finished tied for eighth place with a score of 224 (8-over par).

Clayton Gray placed 11th for the Eagles with a score of 226 (10-over par) and Heath Newsom placed 27th with a 244 (28-over par).

MCC will return to action October 3-4 in Wesson, MS to take part in the MACJC Event #3 hosted by Co-Lin at Wolf Hollow Golf Course.

MCC Soccer Continues Busy Home Slate

The 2015 Meridian Community College soccer season is in full gear and the Eagles are currently enjoying one of its biggest home stands in recent memory. MCC is in preparation to host non-conference foe, Hinds Community College, on Tuesday night at C.D. Smith Field. The doubleheader against Hinds will also mark the fourth straight home doubleheader for the program. MCC is currently in the middle of a six-game home stand that will also include matches with Jones County Junior College (October 6) and Pearl River Community College (October 9).  

The MCC women are currently on a role in 2015 and are right in the middle of a tight race in the MACJC South standings. The Lady Eagles have won five straight matches and most recently stepped out of division play to take a 3-2 overtime victory back on Friday afternoon against Holmes Community College. Freshman Effie Morrison scored the go-ahead goal in the extra session to pace the Lady Eagles to the dramatic victory. Morrison has had a marvelous 2015 campaign by leading the team in goals with 14 which ranks her in the top ten among all junior college players in the country. Morrison was also recently named the MACJC Player of the Week after scoring six goals in one week for the Lady Eagles.  

The MCC women are currently 6-3-1 overall for the season and will look to continue its winning ways on Tuesday night at  5 p.m. against Hinds. The MCC men will also be in action on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The night of soccer at Meridian Community College will also be highlighted by a special event for local high school seniors in the area. The Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College and the MCC Recruiters will co-host a tailgate party, Senior Night, as well on Tuesday night. High school seniors, parents, and families are welcome to attend the tailgate event on Tuesday night as a part of the soccer doubleheader against Hinds. There will be free food, pom poms, music, tailgating games, and more. The event will give participants an opportunity to learn about ACT scholarships, honors college, and many other opportunities that MCC has to offer.

MCC Soccer Star Named MACJC POTW

Meridian Community College freshman forward Effie Morrison was named the recipient of the MACJC Player of the Week on Tuesday morning as voted on by representatives of each conference school. Morrison led the MCC soccer team to a pair of key MACJC South Division victories last week to help her squad keep pace in the tough divisional race. Morrison had a superb pair of games by scoring six goals in 10 shots to help MCC defeat Mississippi Gulf Coast and Co-Lin.

Morrison currently has 10 total goals for the season which ranks 11th in the country among all junior college players. Morrison, the former New Hope star, will now be nominated for NJCAA National Player of the Week which will be announced later this week. The Lady Eagles are currently 4-3-1 overall and 3-2 in conference action for the 2015 season. MCC will return to action today by hosting Northwest Mississippi Community College in non-conference action at 2 p.m.

MCC Completes Historic Championship Weekend

The Meridian Community College golf team completed one of its most impressive performances in school history by capturing the MACJC Event #2 which was held over the weekend in Corinth, MS at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club.

MCC captured the tournament championship on Sunday with a two-day team score of 560 (274-286) which was five strokes ahead of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The weekend belonged to freshman Lance Strickland who earned top medalist honors among the field with a two-day total of 131 (64-67). The opening round score of 64 by the former Lamar School star on Saturday also set a school record for lowest single round. The opening round score of 64 by Strickland also set a course record at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club.

Grant Renegar also turned in a solid performance with a 141 (69-72), while Heath Newsom had a 142 (69-73).
Colby Evans finished with a two-day total of 146 (72-74) and Camden Backel completed the tournament with a 146 (74-74).

MCC will return to action on September 28-29 at the Blazer Classic which will be hosted by Belhaven University at Castlewoods Country Club in Brandon, MS.

MCC's Pimenta Claims Men's Single Title at USTA/ITA JUCO Championships

The USTA/ITA Southern Regional JUCO Championships concluded a four-day tournament on Saturday with winners from three different junior colleges around the area.  The tournament began Wednesday night  with seventy-six singles players and thirty-five doubles teams.  The Southern JUCO is the one of the biggest among the ITA JUCO tournaments.  

Players from Copiah Lincoln Community College, East Central Community College, Hinds Community College, Holmes Community College, Marion Military Institute, Mississippi Gulf Coast CC and Meridian competed for an opportunity to take one male and one female singles player and a male and a female doubles team to the National Small College Championships, which will be held October 14-18 at Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.  The National Small College is in an elite class as this is the only tournament in any sport that allows players an opportunity to compete against larger colleges.  

The National Small College Championships brings the best of the best from JUCO, DII, DIII, and NAIA. 
The winners of this tournament will get a chance to play at the Division I Indoor Championships to be held in November with the support of sponsors USTA/ITA.  

After four long days of play, the winners surfaced.  In singles play, Meridian CC’s Jason Pimenta took an early lead and breezed to the win over Marion’s Adam Bahney 6-2, 6-1.  

Pimenta came into the tournament as the number one seed, so he had a Bye the first round.  In the round of 32, Matthew Philley(Holmes) withdrew; Pimenta advanced to the Round of 16 before playing a match.  In the round of 16, Pimenta defeated Diep (Gulf Coast) o,o.  He then faced Gulf Coast’s Noah Tippen.  He did not lose a set on the way to the finals.  He also cruised past MMI’s Harry Foster 0,0.  East Central Community College’s Will Stewart won the consolation singles with a win over Hinds’ Chris Crapps 8-3.  

In men’s doubles, it was an all Marion Military final as Harry Foster/Andrew Wright defeated teammates Adam Bahney/Max Holloway 6-1, 6-3.  

Meridian’s Pimenta/Sam Bulter lost in the semifinals to Bahney/Holloway 8-6.  Foster/Wright advanced to the finals with a win over MGCCC’s Sam Blackburn/Brett Bowen 8-4.  

Foster/Wright took the tournament doubles from a pool of twenty double teams.  In the consolation finals, it was an all Meridian contest as the teams of John Taylor Champion/Nathan Hollis defeated MCC’s duo Walt Harrington/Noah James 8-5. Champion/Hollis moved to the consolation finals with a win over fellow teammates Will Irvin/Alex Vaughn 8-5.  Harrington/James defeated Hendon/Villarreal (Hinds) 8-2 to move to the consolation finals.

In women’s action, Meridian dominated play although Mississippi Gulf Coast won both championship berths. Meridian had five of eight players to advance to the quarterfinals.  In the round of 16, Paulina Estrada (GC) defeated East Central’s Brook Payen 0,0.  East Central’s Kaley Bufkinmoved to the semis by defeating Kaylen Cooper (Holmes) 2, 0.  Shelby Zachry (MCC) defeated Karah Younger (GC) 7-6 (5), 6-0 to advance.  Chaney Mills (ECCC) advanced to the quarters with a 1, 2 win over Katie Robinson (GC).  

Meridian’s freshman player, Hayden Hill, moved to the quarters with a win over Hannah Wegner (GC) 4, 0. Freshman Taylor Miller, (MCC) defeated Rachel Rhett (Hinds) 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.  Freshman Kyra Holway (Meridian) moved to the quarters with a win over Emily Dykeman (EC), 2, 4.  

The final match of this round had Meridian’s Paige Gibson, who was the number two seedbreezing past Angel Seals (GC) 0, 2.  These wins set up the all MCC matchups in the bottom half of the singles bracket. MCC’s Miller and Hill had a battle with Hayden Hill coming out the victor with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 win.  

Paige Gibson defeated freshman teammate Kyra Holway 3, 1 to advance to the semis.  Rounding out the quarterfinal matches had MCC’s Shelby Zachry defeating Chaney Mills (ECCC) 1, 3 and GC’s Paulina Estrada defeating ECCC’s Bufkin 0,1.  

In the semis, Paige Gibson put out her freshman teammate, Hayden Hill in two sets4, 2 .  Paulina Estrada (GC) defeated MCC’s Zachry 1, 2 to advance to the finals.  In Saturday action, Meridian’s Gibson fell in three sets to Paulina Estrada 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.  In doubles action, Estrada/Katie Robinson took the championships in three sets with a win over Zachry/Gibson (MCC) 5-7, 6-2, 10-2.  Gibson/Zachry won three matches to advance to the finals. In the opening round, they defeated McCrimon/McCrimon (ECCC) 8-1.  They then breezed past Meyers/Brown (Hinds) 8-0.  The MCC duo defeated Kaley Bufkin/Chaney Mills (ECCC) 8-2 to set up the final matchup with the number one doubles seed, Paulina Estrada/Katie Robinson. In other action, Meridian’s double team of Jami Daugherty/Taylor Miller fell in the quarters to Estrada/Robinson.  Alden Hartley/Kyra Holway were defeated by Hinds’ Rhett/Slusasz 9-7.  

The final Meridian duo, Hayden Hill/Brittany Allen fell in the first round of play to the number three seeds Kaley Bufkin/Chaney Mills (ECCC) 8-6.

The Meridian teams return to action Friday when they travel to Boaz, AL for dual matches with Gadsden State and Snead.
